The Karate program comes in a few different forms here at Guinn Martial Arts. All classes use modern exercise science and the real self defense applications to make each student their best.
Our Karate program is based on a style called Shotokan Karate but also has some influence from other styles like Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu, and some Kung Fu and Wushu systems like Wing Chun Chuan and Four Gates Kung Fu.
Applied Karate – true and authentic Karate is a system that includes throws, joint locks, and striking among other key themes. The Karate and Tae Kwon Do styles taught by most of today’s instructors are great if all you want is the sport side of those systems. It is great exercise but ask any law enforcement or security professional and they will tell you that these systems are lacking when taken out of the sport arena and applied to the real world.
Combining the teachings of the Karate masters of the past and research of exercise science today we focus on bringing the best out in every student. Making each student capable of defending themselves while still striving for great physical fitness. We call our Karate system applied to coincide with the renewed school of thought that is slowly creeping across the globe. There is so much more to Karate then the sport aspect and we want to show you what it is all about. The applied classes are divided up between the kids classes and the adult classes. They are listed as Kids Karate for children age 7 to 15 and the Applied Karate classes for students age 10 to 13 with an adult present in class or 13 to adult. Also , one more important note to all adults out there. These Karate classes are for any age or physical condition(with your physician’s approval). If you are looking to improve your fitness, lose some weight, get into better shape then you are now then these classes are ready for you today. Don’t wait till you get into better shape. You can benefit from these classes now.
Kids Karate – Kids classes start at age 7 and go to age 15. We teach our kids a solid foundation on the mechanics of Karate and over time begin to introduce the self defense applications of those moves. Keeping in mind that real self defense applications are taught in a manner that makes the use of these techniques against the rules in a tournament or sport realm. Eventually all students in the kids classes move to the adult class and begin learning a more in depth approach to the real world applications of Karate.
