Hello Guinn Martial Arts Family,
It is my hope that we all see some great improvements this summer and I want to do everything I can to see each of your succeed. To make sure that I do everything I can to make that happen I am going to send you some newsletters over the summer to give you as much insight into what you need to know about Guinn Martial Arts but also about you. A few articles I plan on sending to you will be written by some great health professionals and friends of mine. For now here are some suggestions and bits of knowledge that I think will help you along this journey.
Improvements and new opportunities are coming to Guinn Martial Arts within the next year so be sure to keep a close eye on our newsletters. If you have any questions, suggestions, comments for me please contact me and I will do everything I can to help you. Please share these emails with your friends and family. The more interest we get in our school the more we can do with the school. Better equipment, guest instructors, and much more. I am very happy that you have all decided to be part of the summer program.
More letters to come soon!

1. Fitness and Exercise:
- Having trouble with pushups during Burpees? Skip the pushups at the bottom of the Burpee once you have reached your half max limit, try to do more if you can but stop if you reach the point where you can only go down and can’t come back up. Finish the rest of the Burpee without the pushups. If you start to feel dizzy or light headed slow down but keep going, it is more important that you keep a slow steady rhythm then how fast you can finish.
- Rest between sets: Be sure to give your body at least 2 minutes or more between sets. If you need to you can also break up the sets you need to do to over the entire day. Just make sure they all get completed. If you miss something of your workout that day then don’t try to make it up the next day. Just wait till your next workout and try again to get as much done as possible.
- Make sure you limit your heavy lifting on the days where you are not doing your exercises. The point of the day or days between exercises are to allow your body to heal.
- Muscles you can use everyday! I know you are going to love to hear this but you can exercise your stomach daily. Your abs have a remarkable ability to heal and adjust to exercise so when in doubt…work ‘em out.
- Between our assigned exercise days if you have 10 spare minutes go for a walk. Now here is the trick. Walk as fast as your legs will carry you. You might want to invest in some good shoes and be careful putting too much pressure on your heels when you do walk. Walk in grass or sand if you cannot find some good shoes. Something that will cushion your step some. If you do walk in grass or an uneven surface be careful and watch your step. We don’t want you to be injured and not be able to come back to class.
2. Knowing how your body works:
- The overload principle: your body responds to the overload principle by building what it need to survive. If you overeat the body will build fat stores to combat the overwhelming amount of food in your system. If you lift weights or performs some other exercise, only doing more then you can do comfortably or “overloading” your system is going to make your body adjust and grow stronger.
- I’ll just skip a meal: NO! Don’t miss your meals. By missing a meal your bodies metabolism will slow down because it sees that you are not taking on food. If your metabolism slows then so does your bodies ability to burn fat. My first question when I heard this is, what exactly is my Metabolism. It is defined as:
me-tab-o-lism: Show Spelled Pronunciation [muh-tab-uh-liz-uh m] ?noun
1. Biology, Physiology. the sum of the physical and chemical processes in an organism by which its material substance is produced, maintained, and destroyed, and by which energy is made available. – Random House Dictionary
3. Events:
This weekend we are going to be attending a seminar in Independence Mo. with martial arts master Kris Wilder. We will be leaving from my home at about 4:45am. The event only costs $50 to get in and is from 10am to 4pm. It should be a great time and some great training. If you are interesting in attending please call me before Saturday. We should be back in town by 10pm.

Guinn Fitness Enterprises, LLC and Guinn Martial Arts
That is it! We are official. Guinn Fitness Enterprises LLC has been registered with the State and Federal Government and we are operating as Guinn Martial Arts. What does that mean to you? That we have taken another big step toward making sure our students get the best services available through Guinn Martial Arts. We are developing a business plan for the company to operate under as we look toward future growth and expansion. Parts of that plan will be posted on the website so that everyone can know who we are and what we do. As part of this growth, beginning March 2009 please make all checks are made out “Guinn Martial Arts”.
Class Schedule Updates
There are no changes in the schedule on Monday and Tuesday at this time. The only changes you need to know about are these:
Classes on Wednesday are by appointment only unless someone wants to take a space in those classes permanently. This will leave those times open for Personal Lessons, Groups Class make-up times, and other events as needed. The same arrangement is also available on Thursday. We have by appointment classes available at 6, 7, and 8pm.
Makeup for the Ice
We have a pretty heavy ice storm in January and I want to offer a time for each student to make up for that lost time. Right now I am offering a makeup Karate class on Wednesday February 18th and 25th at 6:00pm for kids age 7 to 12 and 7:00pm for age 13 through adult. If you would like to use one of these times please call or email me so I know when to expect you. My phone number as always is 918-376-7672 or email at sensei@guinnmartialarts.com
Buy three months get one month free
For those of you that are interested Guinn Martial Arts is offering a payment plan that will allow you to pay for three months of services and get one month free. Our month to month rates do not change this additional payment option is merely for your convenience. This offer is only good through the end of this year 2009.
Private Lessons
Private lessons are still available to everyone. Interested in getting a jump start on your next rank? Just want to know a few things about how to defend yourself? Now we offer half hour and full hour private lessons. Half hour classes are $20 and full hour classes are $40 each. Just like the three month plan above if you purchase three private lessons at a time you will get one extra lesson free. These lessons can be used anytime within one year of purchase.
Jissen Magazine
The GuinnMartialArts.com website started hosting the Jissen Magazine several months ago and the fourth edition is now available. “Jissen” means actual combat in Janpanese and it has some incredible articles in it. The best part, it is free totally free! If you want to take your understanding of the practical side of the martial arts to the next level this is the publication for you. I highly recommend it to everyone. All this is of course thanks to Iain Abernethy who is the driving force behind this magazine. The older issued of Jissen are also available from the website.
A Place to Grow
I have enjoyed working our of my home but now I think it is time to expand. I want to keep classes fair to small sized to make sure that each student still gets the instruction they need but I need to find more space. We are currently working out on about 325 square feet in my den. I am hoping for something more in the range of 500 square feet or more. I teach classes on Monday 5:30 to 8pm and Tuesday from 5:30 to 9pm. I have been looking for sometime but frankly have not had much luck on my own. So, I am turning to you to help me, because I have found the more one networks the better the odds are for success. My hope is to find a location that is willing to work with me on rent and possibly allow me to put up a sign or banner for the class. Days and times are fairly flexible if we find a good location. So if you have any suggestions please contact me.
Homework
We have started giving students homework to help them accomplish their goals in the martial arts. They will not get homework every week but they will most weeks. Please work with these students to help them succeed in completing the homework. The homework doesn’t amount to more more than about 10 to 20 minutes of work each day but it will affect a difference in them that could last a lifetime. If you ever have any questions please contact me. Also, many answers can be found on the GMA website. Your questions may very well end up on the website, there to help others. The homework is not graded so the students will not fail a grade or anything of that nature. However, in order for them to learn disciple, a good work ethic, and to get closer to the next rank this homework is very needed. The ultimate goal is black belt and beyond. I will be posting an article on what does Black Belt mean for real?
Feedback
As always, I want to hear your feedback. If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or just need clarification on anything please contact me by phone, email, website contact page, or in-person. I want to make sure the services we offer grow and get better so I welcome all feedback.
